Correlations between Young Disabled Client¢¥s Self Concept and Perceptions of Their Family Environment

Abstract
This study was designed to identify the correlation between perceived family environment and self concept of disabled young clients. The purpose was to contribute to nurse¢¥s understanding of disabled young client¢¥s responses to their health problems and to the planning of nursing intervention toward the attainment of client¢¥s potential abilities.
The subjects of this study were 39 disabled young people aged from 12 to 25 who were attending one middle school and one occupation center in Incheon, one middle school in Daejeon and the group consisted of the disabled in Seoul. The data was collected from March 20th to May 10th, 1988.
The tools used for this study were the Family Environment Scale designed by Moos and Insel and the Self Concept Scale adaapted by Jung, Won-Sik from W H. Fitt¢¥s Tennessee Self Concept Scale.
The data was analyzed by Frequency, t-test, Analysis of Variance, Pearson Correlation Coefficient and Chronbach¢¥s alpha reliability test.
The results included the follow:
1. There was not significant the family environment perception score related to the demographic and disabled characteristics.
2. There were significant age (r=0.3036, p=0.03) and the onset-age of the disease (F=7.012, p=0.01) in the self concept score related to the demographic and disabled characteristics.
3. The hypothesis, "The family environment perception score and the self concept score will be positively correlated" was supported (x=0.5188, p=0.000).
